Progress continues on the first episode of Roland. Ten days remain until the premiere of Laisse I: Fly, Envious Time!
Has it really been one year? Since the last update of this blog, a full year has passed–a year of graduations, matriculations, hard work, and new life experiences. But here we are in October 2011, with an exciting new update:
On November 15, 2011, the first episode of the original miniseries Roland, will premiere at blip.tv! Roland, a film about love and vengeance, loss and redemption, was created and filmed by dozens of Hillsdale College students between spring 2009 and spring 2010.

It has been several weeks since the last update of this blog, and that has been largely due to the obvious complexity of legal training and the efforts of the various crew members to focus on their undergraduate and professional studies. Roland has temporarily been put on hold, and the main reason for this is the unfortunate news that Jeffrey Gaiser will no longer be the composer for the film score, due to commitments of his own.
We are sorry to see him go, and the scoring will now be taken over in large part by Allen Shoff, with assistance from Doug McAlister, who plays the lead role in the film. Due to this setback, the tentative date will be pushed back further, and we are reluctant to put a firm date on the release until we have a more concrete schedule in place.
Release Format Exclusive
Today we officially announce the format of the final release of Roland. Rather than a single film, Roland will be released as a five episode miniseries. The biggest benefit of this format is that the first part will be ready within a matter of weeks, as editing has been completed on the first two episodes and now waits solely for the score and final mixing.

Many questions have been raised about the release date of ROLAND, and these and other questions will soon be answered. By way of whetting anticipation until then, it is my great honor to announce that Jeffrey Emerson Gaiser, talented rising composer, will be scoring the film, combining select themes co-authored with director Allen Shoff and his own remarkable and moving compositions.

Gaiser, whose compositional prowess has been seen most demonstrably in the Regent University Reel Dreams Film Competition winning short film, “A Fragile Hope,” has won numerous awards and accolades for his previous works for film and concert performance. Check out his soundtrack, available for sale, to experience firsthand the music of this young and gifted musician.
Initial discussions see the score for ROLAND utilizing a smaller chamber ensemble for its immediacy and poignant effect, and the soundtrack will be one of the highlights of the film. Gaiser’s original score will be combined with the jazz performance of the inimitable Erin O’Luanaigh and additional students from the Hillsdale College Jazz Ensemble, who performed three pieces on the set of the Roxy’s nightclub. Although temperatures dipped below 40 degrees in the unheated space, the musicians played their hearts out and gave life to the scene. The actors considered it one of the most exciting days of filming, due in large part to these performers in this fantastic set.
Stolen Fire Films is pleased to announce that the first major revamping of its homepage is complete, and in the next few weeks will be fully populated with content, from production photos to trailers to behind the scenes footage from all of its major productions, including some of the earliest short films. Combined with this new look and new design, this very blog, Promethean Ink, will now serve as the official blog of Stolen Fire Films, your source for all news, updates, and important information about the latest films.
Be sure to check back at Stolen Fire Films regularly in the upcoming weeks, as it will soon be bursting with content! Plans are in motion to start the official Stolen Fire Films store, where you can purchase the short films and original scores themselves, as well as t-shirts, posters, and other memorabilia.

Cast, Crew, and Friends of Stolen Fire Films,
Due to the increasing pressures of the end of the semester, and the immense amount of work necessary to complete the post-production of ROLAND, the premiere will be postponed to a later date. To ensure the quality of production remains at the same high standard we set at the beginning of this project, we at Stolen Fire Films concluded that to attempt to rush its completion would reduce the impact of the final product. Thus, in an effort to ensure that all of the sacrifices of time and talents that made the production possible will be properly rewarded, this project will be put on hold until after the end of the semester.
But what does this mean for the premiere? Right now, we do not know when it will be, or in what form. But what is certain is that when we do show ROLAND publicly, it will be a version of which we can all be proud.
This does sadden those of us who have put a great deal of effort into making this film, but upon careful consideration of the reality of the situation, this appears to be the best solution. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding, and I hope that the end of this semester finds you all well.
Allen Shoff
Director, Stolen Fire Films
The first teaser trailer for “Roland” is on YouTube for your viewing pleasure! This one minute, fifty-two second not only contains the first footage ever publicly released for this film, but also sets the release date for the final film on May 1st, 2010. Let us know what you thought of it here in the comments!
On November 13, 2009, we had our biggest filming day to date. We filmed, with permission from the owners and the Hillsdale Sheriff’s department, at the old factory in downtown Hillsdale. Special credit must be given to our Weapons Consultant, John Oxendine. Also on set was our Effects Coordinator, Matt Noble. While it was a hectic and stressful day, after reviewing the footage, the production team considers it a complete success.

The month of March began in a pool of blood for Stolen Fire Films as ‘ROLAND’ ended its fifth day of production. The largest scene to date, it included more than fifteen cast and crew members working throughout the afternoon to replicate the harsh reality of a crime scene. As before, the exquisite compositional eye of Chuck Grimmett was on set to record the scene, and he was joined by Aaron Mortier, providing additional set photos for your enjoyment.
